Pros
I have a Garmin 696. Great VFR tool! Now, any plane I rent has the information I need regardless of how the aircraft is equipped. Long cross country flights are now IFR accurate. The big screen makes scanning the information presented so easy and quick. My eyes can get back outside the cockpit much faster. The size is not a problem for me. The instrument panel is fully visible.
I recommend purchasing the Headset Companion Audio Interface with the 696. The audio portion of the 696 is also very good. It's like having your own "bitch'n betty" on board (for all you F-18 drivers).
Cons
If one is "height-disadvantaged" the size of this tool could block out some of the instrument panel. Probably sitting on a phone book or a couple of pillows would solve this problem. Anyone over 5' should not have a problem.
General Comments
I have over 1000 hours in Navy fighter aircraft. I just recently received my private certificate. The Garmin 696 helps melt both of my aviation worlds together in one simple, information package.

Pros
great concept and a great product
Cons
If you have a Garmin 530/600 or G1000 you automatically know how to use this product. I wish the video went into more detail besides the basic functions or they would release an expert edition that shows the more advanced features. Overall it is pretty basic, common sense related.

Pros
Very nice sized screen with much better screen navigation than the 496. Dual screen is nice as is the ability to have 3 rows of data - very helpful.
Cons
Size is actually a problem if you are planning to use a panel dock. True 8 inches with dock will be a problem in many planes. Most of all, I haven't found a line in cable that will work with a panel dock since the line in goes on the side.
Price of database updates. Garmin has the market cornered and charges very high prices for updates.
General Comments
Overall I'm very impressed with the capabilites of the 696.

Only getting my ticket a few weeks ago this is the first GPS for an airplane i have bought, but using a GPS while boating for many years the large screen far out weighs the price for the unit,i have used small screen Gps's in boats and traveling a fast speeds in rough water the little screens are useless. The garmin is very easy to use and is packed with lots of information, i see using it as my primary navigation aid with the gps and vor in the plane as a backup.theres no question that this type of unit is the wave of the future.
