Military Spec Kneeboards - Available Exclusively from Sporty's
These kneeboards are currently in use by Air Force and Navy pilots as well as other members of the U.S. Dept. of Defense. They were adopted by the Air Force and Navy because of their proven reliability, high quality, and lightweight construction. The wide elastic strap, contoured bottom with non-slip foam strips, and rounded corners allow for comfortable use. The deluxe model features a rheostat lighting system for both day and night use, and the top clip opens wide enough to hold all but the thickest NACO approach plate books. We feel these Military Spec Kneeboards are the finest of their type-for both day and night flying.
Sporty's Kneeboard
Same high quality construction and features as our Deluxe Lighted Kneeboard, except it does not have a light. Overall measurements are 10" x 5"; weighs 10 oz.

Pros
Light, ergonomic, just the right width (C172 w/two pilots), with a powerful spring loaded clip to handle your facility directory, approach plates, etc.
Cons
I've only got five hours flight time utilizing the product but it certainly seems like it will go the distance durability wise (isn't much that can fall apart.) Oh, and like other reviews stated, forget the pencil sharpener.
General Comments
I thought the military boards were hinged and opened up like a book, utilizing the space between the writing surface and bottom of the board--this sure would be handy for keeping pens and pencils, etc.

This works well for those that are not so tall. Most KB's interfere with the flight controls for those of us that have shorter legs. This one fits perfect!

Contoured on the bottom for a great fit. Dual clips to hold both ends of kneeboard-sized material. Top clip will grab and hold thick approach plate books.
Cons
Can't think of any
General Comments
Have a military surplus kneeboard dating from the 60s that I really love, but has fallen into disrepair. Wanted to find an exact replacement, and this new kneeboard is spot on. Now tough plastic instead of metal, it's otherwise the same kneeboard though I think the new clips actually hold thicker documents.

Pros
This is a heavy duty plastic kneeboard that will remain strapped firmly to your leg, even when doing high G-force maneuvers to avoid AAA fire, or SAM attacks. Fortunately this is not a major daily occurrence in GA… It is a bit thick, but I fly a stick, so clearance is not an issue here. It’s worked well for me so far. The top and bottom map clamps will hold things down with authority, even your finger, so watch out. I would give it 8 out of 10 stars for pilots who fly a stick and where kneeboard to control clearances are not an issue.
Cons
The built in pencil sharpener is apparently made in China, by the cheapest Chinese bidder in that country. Use only in an emergency. The pencil shavings fall out the bottom of the sharpener, as there is no catch pan for the shavings. Because the shavings fall right out of the bottom, they tend to fall on your leg, and when you wear shorts with shoes and socks, the shavings go down your leg into the shoe or sock. This causes irritation, and can become distracting in the cockpit, especially during heavy right rudder application. Use only in an emergency. Get a mechanical pencil… and, a spare mechanical pencil.
The lower built in pencil holder does not protect the sharpened pencil tip, and this leads to broken tips. Just get a mechanical pencil, and don’t use the lower holder or the sharpener.
In spite of my negative ranting, I give 8 or 10 stars.

Pros
I had read reviews about the board being too thick and getting in the way of the yoke in a C172. I have used it a few times now and that has not seemed to be a problem. Clips are strong a secure. Worked very well on medium range cross country flight.
Cons
No real concerns here.
General Comments
I was really pleased with the kneeboard overall. It performed as well or better than I expected. I would recommend buying this item.

Good price. Not too bulky for flying in a Diamond DA 20.

The pencil sharpener isn't really that useful in the cockpit unless you don't mind the mess on your lap. Bring extra pencils.

Pros
The product seems very handy for flying. I purchased it in anticipation of doing my first solo cross country soon. I have not used it yet, but I do know that I am going to have to be very organized. I think this product will help for that.
Cons
It may be a little small, so I purchased another item for the other knee to give me extra space and versatility.
