First Plane from Lockheed’s “Skunkworks”
The P-38 Lightning was the only American fighter in production for the duration of WWII. Powered by two 1,475 hp Allison V-12 engines with counter-rotating propellers, the Lightning could reach speeds of up to 420 mph. Distinctive for its tricycle gear and twin booms, the Germans called it “The Fork-Tailed Devil”. With its victory ratio of 10 to 1, several pilots achieved ace status flying the Lightning including America’s highest scoring ace, Major Richard I. Bong. This museum quality aerosculpture is a replica of the P-38 flown by Maj. Bong named “Marge” after his fiancée. Handcarved of mahogany, it is accurately detailed with a portrait of Marge on the nose and victory markings. The P-38 has a wingspan of 19.5” and is 14.25” long. The mahogany stand is a work of art in itself with its handcarved Lockheed logo and gleaming stainless steel arm.
