Boy Scout Camporee and Aviation Merit Badge Weekend at Sporty’s
April 24-26
Batavia, Ohio
Nearly 250 Boy Scouts and 100 adult volunteers participated in a weekend camporee and aviation merit badge event at the Clermont County/Sporty’s Airport. The event was organized by leaders from the Makateewa district of the Dan Beard Council and included troops from Makateewa, Hopkins, Trailblazer and William Henry Harrison districts.
Pilots and aviation professionals from the greater Cincinnati area volunteered their time to teach the requirements for the Aviation Merit Badge to the scouts. A series of five learning stations were set up to instruct the attendees on subjects including, aerodynamics, preflight, aircraft instruments and aviation careers. A tour of the Tri-State Warbird Museum, located at Clermont County Airport, was also part of the program. During this tour, scouts had an opportunity to see up close the museum’s operational aircraft, including a P-51 Mustang, B-25 Mitchell and TBM-3 Avenger. As a bonus, an AirCare helicopter made a lunchtime appearance on Saturday. A couple of EAA Chapter 174 members also volunteered their time to put their planes on display for the kids.
